Nine years ago, responding to changes in commercial chemistry practice in the New York area, the chemistry department at City Tech set out to redesign of the College’s only chemistry degree program, the Associate in Applied Science, Chemical Technology. Two years later, the Associate in Science, Chemical Technology degree, designed to facilitate students’ transfer to bachelor’s programs, came on-line. Immediately following launch of that degree, the department began drawing plans for a new four-year degree in chemistry. The bachelor of science in Applied Chemistry, the only such program in greater New York, began accepting new and transfer students in 2017. The College graduated it first BS Applied Chemistry graduates in June of this year. A few months later, at the start of Fall term, the department moved operations across Jay Street to spacious new labs and offices on the fifth floor of the New Academic Building. This is a rich moment for Chemistry at City Tech.
