Dee Lowe Joins HABITAT Women Build

On May 29th, I'm grabbing my hammer, strapping on my tool belt, and joining Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley’s 2024 Women Build. I, along with my fellow Baird & Warner team of women, will be spending the day working on a house in Carpentersville. The goal with Women Build is to empower women to help families build strength, stability and independence. Habitat has the ability to provide opportunities for hands-on learning, and given these tools, women can succeed in changing their communities. You can make a difference by helping me reach my fundraising goal so we can change lives and prove that there's nothing a group of committed women can't do. Change happens one person at a time. I appreciate any support you can give - big, small, or somewhere in between.

Below is information on how this organization benefits families in communities across the Chicagoland area:

1.  Habitat For Humanity builds affordable homes for low-income families.  84% of the families selected in our area are headed by single mothers.

2.  Families are carefully selected by our local Habitat office (Northern Fox Valley) based on their housing need and their ability to repay a mortgage on the property.  The head of the household must be employed.  Their employment history, credit history and ability to make monthly mortgage payments are all evaluated.  They will get an affordable, no-interest mortgage financed by Habitat for their new home; it is not just given to them.  Their equity in the home vests over the first 10 years of ownership.

3.  The head of the household is responsible for spending 250 hours working with Habitat contractors to help build their home.  Family members and friends can help them with this commitment.
4.  Completed homes are landscaped, have a driveway, are fully applianced, thoroughly cleaned, and move-in ready.
5.  When the home is complete, the home is turned over to the family on site (not at a title office).  There is often a home blessing ceremony that takes place, with Habitat contractors who have worked on the home in attendance.  It's an emotional day!

About this Event

Dee Lowe Joins HABITAT Women Build

Join a community of women volunteering together to celebrate our strengths, have a blast and build permanent and affordable homes for woman-led families.

What is Women Build?

Women Build is a month-long event, that invites women to help families build strength, stability and independence through housing. Our Women Build volunteers work under the guidance of construction professionals, and alongside other volunteers and future Habitat homeowners. Whether you are learning new skills or simply adding a few to your tool belt, this is a rewarding experience for all involved, and improves the community that you share.

Women Buildis also a terrific way to invilve your friends and family in crucial work with a lasting impact. women helping women sends a positive and powerful message.

Why is it important?

Achieving housing stability is far more difficult for women to realize than for men in similar situations. Here are just three reasons why:

  • Men earn more on average than women, resulting in access to higher credit, better loans, and better-quality homes and neighborhoods.
  • Caregiving responsibilites often limit a women's ability to dedicate the necessary time to obtaining and maintaining consistent employment and decent housing.
  • Single women are denied mortgages at higher rates than single men despite the fact women are more reliable at paying back mortgages.

How does it work?

Women Build is an event where teams of 10 women come together to help build homes for other women. The event provides the opportunity to take a proactive step in serving our community in a tangible way. It is a terrific way to invole your friends and family in crucial work with lasting impact in a collaborative and friendly environment.

Each Women Builder commits to:

  • building with her team for one full day of the event.
  • raising at least $350 for corporate teams and $250 for peer-to-peer teams
