Please consider joining me in supporting the Teen Urban Farmers (TUF) as they learn to build the benches and create the shade that the ICG needs. This is the program that I have worked with all Summer. I can say for sure that this job training program had a huge impact on our teen participants. One crew member told me "I couldn't have asked for a better job!".
As much as the garden means to the TUF crew, the teens mean SO MUCH to the garden!! Over 6 weeks, this incredible crew transformed the gardens, planned/planted/maintained the beds, and watered every day to keep our plants healthy. Thank you for helping out with this campaign! Come visit the Ithaca Children's Garden soon and relax on our beautiful, new benches... made with love!
About this Campaign
Lauren Salzman
TUF teens learn skills for a bright future, from entrepreneurship to carpentry. Contribute to this teen-directed campaign & empower teens to change the world.
TUF is teens building
TUF teens learn by doing. They plant, they build, they dream, they create. They build rain barrels, pergolas, sheds, fences, raised beds, and more that all add value to Ithaca Children's Garden while demonstrating environmental stewardship.
This year, TUF teens identified a desperate need for more shaded seating at the Garden, and worked with professional carpenters to learn how to build picnic tables and benches out of naturally rot resistant black locust.
They envision picnic tables, benches, and colorful sail shades where they can gather for a meal, and take a well-deserved rest during breaks. Garden usage by the public has grown so much in recent years that shady seating is in short supply.
Teens completed several days of hard work clearing an area adjacent to their farm stand where they can gather, and have resourcefully been using overturned buckets for seating and wood planks for a table top. They envision something better, for themselves and for visitors to enjoy as well!

And they need your help... now.
Teens have gained the skills to build the picnic tables and benches. What they don't have are financial resources to purchase the materials necessary to make their vision a reality. That's where you come in.Won't you let them know their ideas count and are worth turning into reality? Won't you show these remarkable young people you support their dreams by making a gift right now?
TUF is the future
TUF is about teens farming. It's about entrepreneurship. It's about the soil, the water, the seeds, the sales, and the celebration. And it's about so much more.
TUF is about cultivating skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership. It's about lifting one's voice so it can be heard. It's about finding the words and actions that can make real change for a lasting impact. It's about exploring the power of youth to shape our future. It's about building the reality from their vision, in 3D. Here, now, and for a lifetime!
ICG's Teen Urban Farmers are exceptional young people shaping our world. Each summer (since 1999) 15 teens join the ICG work force, bringing their unique backgrounds and perspectives on culture, food, gardening, and their role in the world to their work. It is not uncommon for 3 different languages to be heard spoken among our group, and some of our teens surmount significant obstacles to arrive to work each day. Yet when they arrive, they show up 100%.
