Bones Armes Race for the Face

December 12, 2022, I arrived at the Ozona welcome center, to transfer a rescue headed to Utah.  My leg was from Junction to Ozona that morning for Happy Paws.  Transfer complete, I was approached by a man from Canada, that had stayed the night there in his travel trailer.  He said I don't know what to do but someone dropped a puppy off here last night. He seems friendly but barked all night scared.  I immediately replied " where is it?" Someone had locked in him in the men's room so he wouldn't get run over by traffic.  The man opens the door and out runs this puppy.  He was extremely emaciated carrying his back leg but amazing blue eyes.  I knew immediately what I needed to do.  Please put him in my car. The man replied do you want the bag of food? That caused me to question it is obvious this puppy is starved but the inhumane person dumped him with a bag. What even puzzled me more it was a" healthy weight" kind. This poor puppy was neither healthy or overweight.  On the hour drive home, this sweet boy just collapsed and slept.  Maybe from his night of terror or maybe he felt safe.   I pulled up to the barn when I got home where my husband was working.  I got out walked to my back door opening and saying I did this thing.  Out jumped little skin & bones.   We already had 4 dogs a beagle and 3 rescues.  Clay ask " what are you going to do?"  I said I didn't know but I couldn't leave him.  That day began our journey with Bones, the name I gave him for obvious reasons.  Bones stayed very close to me and my lap became his favorite spot.  It still is but  he is really too large for it now, but Bones doesn't care really neither do I. I gave him a bath and that night he snuggled next to me as we both fell asleep.  A vet visit Monday for shots and a check up revealed he was 20lbs underweight, to weak to even attempt to neuter or X-ray his leg. Bones would have to weigh at least 40lbs.   Bones quickly became part of the pack. He spent his days growing stronger, playing, & being loved.  He found the toy box and would drag out everything. I loved watching him for the first time not only having a toy but a box of them to choose from.  He would carry a " stuffy " where ever he went almost like a security blanket, of course, until it was time to remove all the stuffing creating a snow fall effect all over the house.  I didn't mind. His joy as infectious and he made me laugh at his antics.  Bones was uncoordinated puppy, especially because of the back leg he carried.  It looked like it had been broken and healed wrong.  We would just have to wait till the X-ray.  Finally the day came, he weighed enough, for a trip to the Vet.  Bones was older then I first thought around 10 months.  His leg was actually his knee cap that had been twisted or hung in something causing the injury.  It was felt to best leave it as surgery could cause more damage.  He was put on a supplement and if it every started to bother him we would address it then.   I knew from the first day those amazing blue eyes looked at me, he was a keeper.  Fast forward to today, Bones is happy and healthy.  He no longer carries his leg. He loves the water and swims daily.  He goes from water troughs , to the pond, or the swimming pool.  He still destroys "stuffies", always holding out one to pack around.   His favorite game is tug of war and chase with his older little sister, who he dwarfs.  His DNA revealed 8 breeds but the top 4-35% Labrador, 23% American Pit Bull Terrier, 19% Siberian Husky, 14% American Staffordshire Terrier.  I can't imagine his life before I found him, hopefully he doesn't either.  If he does he doesn't hold it against us and just loves.  Bones Armes with his bright blue eyes is a true rescue story. One of faith and courage and love.
