This year, my sorority, Sigma Delta Tau, has teamed up with fraternities, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Kappa Sigma and Farmhouse, for Greek Week to raise money for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Now you may be wondering, “What is Greek Week?” Every winter, a sorority and one large and some smaller fraternities collaborate to form a Greek Week team. Each team then competes against one another in various activities (ex: field games, dance competitions…) to raise money for charities for their choice. While participating in Greek Week events is a lot of fun, the ultimate goal isn’t to win, (though who doesn’t like to win?) it is to support our chosen philanthropy, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is a cancer treatment and research institution in New York City. Each year, they see more than 300,000 patients and treat more than 400 different subtypes of cancer while maintaining one of the world’s most dynamic programs of cancer research. With more than 120 research laboratories, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has the ability to focus on better understanding every type of the disease. This level of specialization can have an often-dramatic effect on a patient’s chances for a cure or control of his or her cancer. Unfortunately, cancer is something that has affected everyone, whether it is directly or indirectly, which is why donating whatever you can to the cause is so important. Be part of the cause that helps to erase the 1 in 2 and 1 in 3 statistics. For those of you who actually took the time to read this, thank you.
