As a long-time supporter of Literacy Work and current President of its Board of Directors, I know the impact Literacy Works has on people’s lives and its member organizations’ operations. One of my first interactions with Literacy Works was as a tutor when I helped a learner pass the U.S. citizenship test, which required he read and write in English. Because of Literacy Works and the training I received, I was able to support this man – who never learned to read or write in his native language – achieve his goal of becoming a U.S. citizen and having a voice in our democracy. Across its programs, Literacy Works increases individuals’ ability to more fully participate in all aspects of life – from their children’s school, to their job, to interacting with and understanding systems such as health care, to simply being able to order off a menu at a restaurant.
