About Historic House Volunteer Tour Guide

Role:
People help history come alive in historic homes. Docents are what make trips to places like the John Wornall and Alexander Majors houses memorable. Wornall/Majors is looking for individuals to guide guests on a journey back to frontier Kansas City, Missouri. Volunteer docents will lead one-hour tours through the properties. On specific shifts docents will assist guests on self-guided tours by answering questions and providing insight. This position is perfect for all personality types. Wornall/Majors will help new guides construct tours and learn the necessary information. However, docents will need to be comfortable speaking in front of small groups. Help Wornall/Majors serve our visitors by welcoming them as a volunteer tour guide.

Organization description:
We are a non-profit that operates two of Kansas City’s most historic structures: the John Wornall House and the Alexander Majors House. These historic homes serve as the dynamic backdrop for events and community gatherings. We strive to tell an inclusive and accessible story about American mid-nineteenth-century history.


Position duties:
• Learn the history of the historic homes to be able to relay it to guests
• Supervise guests on self-guided tours
• Answer questions
• Enforce house rules
• Give a one-hour guided tour
• Help create a welcoming atmosphere

Time commitment and schedule:
• Both weekday and weekend shifts available, emphasis on weekends
• Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one shift per month

Onboarding process:
After completing a background check, volunteers will attend two virtual training sessions. They will learn the history of the houses as well as tips for creating and delivering effective tours.
