Help Us End Difference-Based Discrimination
In 1999, the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation began developing, in Mississippi, a comprehensive approach to end discrimination.
Since then, four institutes using our model have opened around the world, from Arkansas to South Africa. We are currently helping the University of South Carolina launch a fifth.

We tackle difference-based discrimination in several ways, including:
• Community Building
• Youth Engagement
• Academic Service
Our signature Community Building program, the Welcome Table, now works with 18 partner communities committed to overcoming socioeconomic stagnation. The Welcome Table helps community members grow trust by overcoming bias and discrimination.

Each spring, Mississippi high school students apply to our Summer Youth Institute (SYI). Thirty of them are invited to Oxford for nine days in June. Through the lens of Mississippi civil rights history, they learn to be advocates for their communities. Each "SYIer" develops a project that combines a need of their community with a personal passion; each signs a two-year contract to continue to work with our Youth Engagement staff and to give their projects roots.
Academic Service includes our work within the University of Mississippi community and with other college and university partners. Since 2013, we have helped to train faculty, students, and administrators at more than ten colleges and universities in how to discuss and embrace difference. These partnerships have developed not only within Mississippi, but as far away as Maine and Colorado. Word about our work is spreading.
