About Volunteer at the West Michigan Cancer Center

Our volunteers play a key role in supporting WMCC’s mission to treat the whole person and not just their disease.
Volunteers are considered the heart of West Michigan Cancer Center. As a group, they are caring, dedicated men and women of all ages who offer simple but valuable gifts: a warm smile, a tender touch, a listening ear, and a heartfelt willingness to help. Volunteers lovingly and generously give of themselves as they serve in a variety of capacities. In fact, you often hear them say they receive more than they give.

Our volunteers have many different interests and talents. They help in many ways. That’s why we’ve created a Volunteer Services Program that covers the spectrum—from direct patient contact to traditional services such as helping with administrative duties. The best part is, you can tailor your volunteer work schedule to fit your lifestyle and interests.

*Coffee Cart*
--Volunteers offer a warm smile as they provide hospitality and push a cart full of snacks, coffee and other beverages throughout our facility. They enjoy interacting with patients and caregivers as they await their appointments and receive treatment.
*Security/Greeter*
--Our security/greeter volunteers monitor parking areas and greet people as they walk through our doors, offering a warm cup of coffee, a personal ‘hello’ and directions to appropriate areas. They represent the positive, caring atmosphere of the Center.
*Special Interests*
--Art: Expressive Arts classes are led by volunteer artists and art therapists. A variety of styles of creative expression are explored as a way to cope with emotions connected with the experience of cancer.
--Music: Do you play a musical instrument and enjoy sharing your talent? We’d love to hear from you! Music is used at special events and memorial services.
--Pet Therapy: The therapeutic use of pets as companions has gained increasing attention in recent years for a wide variety of patients –including people with cancer. Animals can provide a source of comfort and bring out our nurturing instinct. If your dog is specially trained in this area, please contact us.
--Occasional Projects: From time to time, volunteers are needed for special projects including health fairs, events, community outreach and our resource library.
