About Foster Grandparent Program

Foster Grandparent volunteers are limited income adults, ages 55+ who serve a minimum of 15 hours per week and receive a small stipend to help defray the cost of volunteering. This stipend is not earned income and does
not determine eligibility for services like social security, food stamps, housing. Grandparents also receive travel reimbursement, supplemental insurance covering their volunteer service, training, and annual recognition.

Foster Grandparents provide individual attention to children with special and/or exceptional needs that are identified by a professional who recommends Foster Grandparent interaction. Special needs include abuse, physical, social, emotional, or academic deficits.

The program is sponsored locally by Volunteers for Community Impact, and funded by the Corporation for National & Community Service, Orange County, the Orlando Magic Youth Fund, and community contributions. Over the years, the program has won more than 20 Walt Disney Community Service Awards and is widely recognized throughout the community for outstanding volunteer efforts.

Opportunities for Foster Grandparents are available in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Volusia, and Flagler counties.
Volunteers serve in the areas of:

• School Readiness: helping 3-4 year old children enter
Kindergarten ready to read

• Mentoring in Afterschool Programs: being a mentor and
positive role model for children in after school centers

• Out of School Time Mentoring: providing support to children in medical facilities and shelters

• Elementary Education: providing guidance daily in elementary school classrooms
