About Mentors

Becoming a V-ELMS mentor requires several humane, basic facets: a big heart, a concerned citizen about the future of society, an awareness of inequities in education, and a willingness to share time.
Since we are virtual, the responsibilities of the mentor allow freedom while simultaneously committing to a worthy cause for the course of a school year. Mentors are matched with their prospective mentee/s by their multiple intelligences. The team/s interact/s via V-ELMS' closed-circuit, learning management system, which houses a proprietary, online curricula based on Character Development & Leadership with a S.T.E.A.M. component. The mentee completes assigned assignments and then sends it to the mentor. The mentor in his/her spare time, reads the message assignment, responds by writing feedback and continues the conversations according to the assignments.
The final expectation is to meet once a month during a face-to-face meet-up on a Saturday morning from 9 - 12 for either a workshop discussing a Character Development or a trip.
To sum up what being a mentor will be like, here is a mentor's testimony about her V-ELMS' experience: “Mentoring with V-ELMS was an extremely rewarding experience. The program provides the opportunity for personal time with our mentees and also allows us a way to stay connected with the youth electronically throughout the school year. V-ELMS, as an organization, strives to create innovative and age appropriate curriculum, which fosters close bonds between mentors and mentees. Above all else, I was happy to serve such a creative program. I not only helped youth, but I learned as well! This is an extraordinary program that I look forward to supporting in the future.”
