About Lesson Volunteer

Side walker - Directly interact and participate with an UpReach student providing various support (physical, emotional, reinforcing directions, etc.) as well as assist with skills needed throughout the lesson. Side walkers are responsible for walking and jogging beside the student to insure safety at all times. (Volunteer training required - min. commitment of one hour per week).

Leader - Responsible for guiding the horse during the lesson and assisting the student as needed for safety. The amount of support varies depending on the student's skill level and goals. (Volunteer training required - min. commitment of one hour per week).

Qualifications: UpReach volunteers must be at least 14 years of age. Program volunteers must be able to walk with occasional jogging for 45 minutes to 1 hour in length. Please let Liz Devine - UpReach Volunteer Coordinator know if you prefer to volunteer in walk only lessons. A minimum commitment of one hour per week per term (lasting six to eight weeks in length) is required. Program volunteers must attend a mandatory training session prior to volunteering in lessons and Horses 101 training is recommended before becoming a horse leader.

Apparel: For your safety, shoes with a closed-toe and closed-heel are required to be worn for volunteer training as well as in the arena and barn aisles at all times. It is recommended that long hair be pulled back and to avoid wearing dangling jewelry or pants that drag on the ground. Please dress appropriate to weather conditions: In the summer months, the barn remains relatively cool. Shorts of appropriate length are acceptable. During winter months, layers are suggested. Please avoid wearing clothes that restrict movement or are so baggy they could get caught in equipment.

Attendance: Your human and horse friends depend on you!!! Once assigned lessons as a program volunteer, you are committed to attend each lesson of that term. Please notify the office as soon as possible if you are unable to attend your scheduled day and time, allowing UpReach the time to find another volunteer to substitute. Please remember to log all volunteer hours as your time is very valuable!
