About Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is a community event that honors the legacy of Dr. King through service to others. University of La Verne students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members are invited to participate in making this holiday a day on, not a day off, by engaging in community service projects throughout the community that revolve around this year's theme of social justice and sustainable communities.
Please view the various service sites and sign up for a community project!
Below is the schedule for the day:
7:30am-Check-in time (please pick up a t-shirt and report to your team leader)
8:00am-Opening program begins
8:20am-Teams will get a lunch as they prepare to depart to their volunteer site
8:30am-All buses will depart
9:00am-12:00pm-Service at site takes place
12:00pm-1:00pm-Lunch and Reflection
1:00pm-Depart site and return to campus
1:30pm-Volunteers arrive to Sneaky Park for the closing program
3:00pm-Event concludes

Amy's Farm's mission is to cultivate community life, friendships, and social justice; educate health and sustainability for people and places; and preserve agricultural lands and organic ways of growing food. Amy's Farm is a working polycultural farm focusing on sustainable, organic methods to farming and provide fresh produce to the local community. They offer education with hands-on, guided tours to visitors of all ages through their educational 501c3 non-profit organization.
Volunteers will assist with organic farming practices by mulching and refurbishing fields.

The Farm at Fairplex (Team 2)

The Farm at Fairplex is located on the premises of the Los Angeles County Fair. The Farm is offers year-round, hands on experience, community resources, and a center of learning. It’s mission is to teach all ages lessons about sustainability, healthy eating, crop growing and the basics of how food is produced, grown, gathered and delivered.
Volunteers will assist with organic farming practices, including mulching, rooting, and planting.

La Verne Peace and Carrots Community Garden (Team 3)

The La Verne Peace and Carrots community garden project provides thousands of pounds of fresh produce annually through the La Verne Church of the Brethren. Michael Wolfsen, a member of the Church of the Brethren, was talking with a couple of her friends in 2008 when they realized how bothered they were with the amount of people hungry in their community. That is when they decided to do something to try and make an impact: grow fresh produce.

African American Museum of Beginnings (Team 4)

The African American Museum of Beginnings is a permanent exhibit reflecting African and African-American history, life, and civilization. The museum is a commemoration of a great people from the artistic expressions of Pomona preschool students to professional exhibits illustrating the life and achievements of classical Africa. The mission of The African America Museum of Beginnings (AAMB) is to play a critical role in the transformation of African communities worldwide with the presentation of a comprehensive historical timeline from the birth of humanity in Africa to current issues within the African Diaspora.
Volunteers will assist with maintenance and organization of the museum, as well as reading to groups of children.

Huerta Del Valle Community Garden (Team 6)

Huerta Del Valle Community Garden is located in Ontario, CA. Huerta Del Valle Community Garden's mission is to cultivate an organization of community members to grow their own organic crops. Through growing food together, the community learns ways to work towards a sustainable community, empowerment, and health, thus creating meaningful work, building lasting skills and developing strong relationships within the city of Ontario.
Volunteers will be doing an assortment of activities, including mulching, planting, and harvesting organic fruits and vegetables.
