Universal Promise focuses strictly on education in rural South Africa. We carry out our agenda by soliciting local input, requiring mutual ownership, and funding only sustainable initiatives. Here is how it works. We seek out underserved, ignored, disenfranchised, underachieving schools in South Africa and explain our singular emphasis on education. In partnership, we then invite administrators, educators, parents, and students each to formulate a Top 10 Wish List of what they feel is vital to elevate the quality of the learning experience for all. We collect the lists, weed out items not focused on education, look for overlaps in responses, and meet with school administrators to finalize Top 10 order. Together we collaborate on developing activities that inspire school and community ownership. Then we begin to carry out the tasks, with full accountability and transparency along the way, in both directions. We also explain that we will be in it until independence is unequivocal and sustainable, after which we will exit while continuing to offer support for programs for which we are fiscally responsible.
