About Working with children in Ghana

Unearth the World (UTW) has partnered with a Ghanaian orphanage and school located in a village just 90 minutes from the capital of Accra. In this project, volunteers will work alongside local villagers to care for, teach, and build relationships with volunteer staff and children. The care tasks include bathing, clothing, feeding, and playing with children. Some volunteers may even wish to help out at the school, assist the cook in preparing meals, or contribute towards building/repair projects as needed.

The orphanage had humble beginnings when one woman selflessly took in 4 orphaned children in 2002. She ran the orphanage in dire conditions, but through the help of donors, local support, and hard work, the orphanage has grown to become a self-sufficient home for over 150 children. A school has also been established to educate the children. The orphanage has made it possible for dozens of children to grow up in a safe, loving environment and receive a basic education. The orphanage has plans to expand physically and would like to send some of its children to secondary school. As a volunteer, you will be contributing at a financial level, but more importantly, you will be working alongside the local Ghanaian staff to help empower these children to become responsible members of society.
