About Project REACH 2021-2022
Project REACH (Reaching Education And Changing Healthcare) is a partnership between UMMC and Barrack H. Obama Magnet Elementary school. The goal of this partnership is to enhance the teaching and learning of science concepts at the elementary school level and expose a diverse group of students to educational and career opportunities in the medical sciences. Volunteers are needed from the SGSHS to teach science lessons once a month to students in grades 3-5.
***Lessons for January, March and May 2022 will be posted in December.

Sign up to teach a lesson below. The task description gives you the teaching objectives/outcomes for your lesson - the rest is up to you!
Dr. Broome will email you with additional details at least one week prior to your scheduled teaching day.

Access to Health Info, Products, and Services
● Students will define the term valid health information.
● Students will identify resources from home, school, and community that provide valid health information.
● Students will describe how to determine if an Internet source is providing valid health information.
● Students will distinguish between fact and opinion in health information.
Force, Motion and Speed
● Students will define the terms force, contact force, non-contact force, motion, balance force, unbalanced force.
● Students will describe how contact and non-contact forces affect the motion of an object.
● Students will predict the effect of balanced and unbalanced forces on the speed and direction of an object in motion.
Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
● Students will define the terms infectious disease antibiotic, and vaccine.
● Students will describe the role of antibiotics and vaccinations in disease prevention. Students will explain the importance of vaccinations in community health.
MIxtures, Solutions, Solutes and Solvents
● Students will define the terms mixture, solution, solute, solvent, dissolve, and concentration. Students will describe the difference between a mixture and a solution.
● Students will describe the relative concentration of a solution by comparing the amount of solute and solvent used to make two or more solutions.
● Students will explain the role of temperature, particle size, stirring, and surface area in dissolving a solute.
Renewable and Non-renewable Resources
● Students will define the term pollution.
● Students will identify examples of environmental pollution (e.g. air pollution - exhaust, smog, cigarette smoke; water pollution - illegal dumping, runoff from manufacturing; soil contamination, etc.)
● Students will identify impacts of pollution on environmental resources.
● Students will identify impacts of pollution on humans (i.e. diseases, access to resources, etc.).
● Students will describe the effects of a polluted environment on the health of living things.
