About Project REACH
Project REACH (Reaching Education And Changing Healthcare) is a partnership between the University of Mississippi Medical Center and Barrack H. Obama Magnet Elementary school. The goal of this partnership is to enhance the teaching and learning of science concepts at the elementary school level and expose a diverse group of students to educational and career opportunities in the medical sciences.
By developing students' science content knowledge and stimulating their interest in the medical sciences, this partnership also aims to create a pool of residents who will be interested in and more capable of serving the future health needs of the population of Mississippi.
Currently, volunteers from the SGSHS at the University of Mississippi Medical Center teach science lessons once a month to students in grades 3-5. These science lessons focus on life science and connect to the trans-disciplinary units of inquiry being taught at these grade levels.
Application Process
Sign up for a lesson below THEN email Dr. Hanna Broome ([email protected]) with the details of the lesson you will teach.
We need volunteers to help with:
Respiratory System
Student outcomes:
1. Students will identify the organs included in the respiratory system.
2. Students will describe the function of the respiratory system as a whole and the function of the organs within the respiratory system.
3. Students describe diseases affecting the respiratory system.
Internal and External Structures
Student outcomes:
● Students will define the terms internal, external, and structure.
● Students will explain that organ systems consist of internal and external structures.
● Students will describe how the internal and external structures of an animal, including humans, support daily function (e.g. bones, muscles, and brain all work together to produce movement).
Personal Health
Student outcomes:
● Students will list health goals that will support their cognitive and physical development.
● Students will evaluate and select strategies to help them attain their health goals.
● Students will identify personal areas of strength and weakness to be utilized and/or addressed in attaining their personal health goals.
Health Information
Student outcomes:
● Students will define the term valid health information.
● Students will identify resources from home, school, and community that provide valid health information.
● Students will describe how to determine if an Internet source is providing valid health information.
● Students will distinguish between fact and opinion in health information.
Mixtures and Solutions
Student outcomes:
● Students will define the terms mixture, solution, solute, solvent, dissolve, and concentration. Students will describe the difference between a mixture and a solution.
● Students will describe the relative concentration of a solution by comparing the amount of solute and solvent used to make two or more solutions.
● Students will explain the role of temperature, particle size, stirring, and surface area in dissolving a solute.
