About Hurricane Sandy Volunteer Opportunities
When a crisis takes place, our instinct is to instantly respond — to extend a helping hand. Together, we can alleviate some of the suffering of our fellow New Yorkers who are still without power, food, and other necessities.
We need volunteers to help with:
Volunteer (Hurricane Sandy Relief Collection and Drive)
Location: Food Warehouse of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, 5361 Preston Court, Brooklyn
The Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty is requesting the following essential items to be sent to its food warehouse: toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, diapers, wipes, baby formula, canned vegetables and fruits, nuts, hand sanitizer, peanut butter, and shelf-stable milk. Please note: these are the only items Met Council is accepting.

Volunteer (Distribute Emergency Items to Homebound Seniors)
Locations: Jewish Association Serving the Aging at 161 Corbin Place, 3161 Brighton 6th Street, and 3601 Surf Avenue, all in Brooklyn
Contact: Meeting times are Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, contact Elaine Rockoff at [email protected] or [email protected].
Donate and distribute emergency items to homebound seniors at the Jewish Association Serving the Aging. The Jewish Association Serving the Aging needs volunteers be distribute supplies to frail seniors in Coney Island, who are unable to leave their apartments, since elevators are not working, and they are unable to walk up or down seven to 20 flights of stairs. Some supplies may be provided by JASA but volunteers are encouraged to bring flashlights and blankets. Emergency supplies, such as water and nonperishable kosher food, are also needed.
