About The Red Shield Kids Club After-School Internship Program

The Salvation Army is pleased to offer a service-learning internship program with our Magness Potter Community Center After School Tutoring Program. You will get to work with children ages 6-13 with tutoring, computer skills, arts and crafts, etc. This program provides a safe learning environment for children to come to every afternoon and keep them off the streets and out of trouble. You will be on the forefront of supporting and helping one of our most important community outreach programs in Doing the Most Good.

Organization Mission: The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church based within the Scriptures of the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The Salvation Army has been serving the Nashville community since 1890, extending a resourceful hand of assistance to families in greatest need, so that they may lift themselves from crisis to stability and independence.

About the Magness Potter Community Center: Coordinates 15 - 20 collaborating private and public social service providers offering a spectrum of essential services - from infant-toddler child care to senior citizen activities - to this community of more than 10,000 people. Target populations are economically disadvantaged families and at-risk youth living in ZIP code 37207. Magness-Potter serves more than 500 families and 2,500 individuals per year.

When: Start date will be at the start of the semester you are selected and end the week prior to finals.

Hours: Unpaid hourly internship, credit hours are available. We need someone who can commit to a consistent weekday schedule between 3:30pm to 6:30pm, based on their school schedule and program requirements.

Internship Job Description:
In this internship program you will participate in several on-going activities that are vital to providing programs and services to people we serve in Middle Tennessee. The following are brief descriptions of what you may be requested to handle:

• Helping children in The Salvation Army afterschool program with their homework.
• Assisting the children with tutoring needs.
• Encourage reading and read to and with the children.
• Create fun learning and educational games with the children to build math and language skills.
• Helping children in The Salvation Army afterschool program with fun and creative arts and craft projects.
• Easy crafts with the children in the afterschool program.

We are looking for current or post-graduate collegiate students with a major or interest in education, social sciences, or non-profit human services.

Internship Job Requirements:

• Prior experience working with children preferred, but not mandatory
• Pleasant personality
• Good Communication Skills
• Ability to participate with the children during games/sports activities


Schedule:

Average Time Commitment: 10-20 hours a week
