About Emergency Services Internship Program

The Salvation Army is pleased to offer a service-learning internship program in our Emergency Services Department. You will get to work with our caseworkers to provide families needed food and support for emergency financial situations. You will be on the forefront of supporting and helping one of our most important community outreach programs in Doing the Most Good.

Organization Mission: The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church based within the Scriptures of the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The Salvation Army has been serving the Nashville community since 1890, extending a resourceful hand of assistance to families in greatest need, so that they may lift themselves from crisis to stability and independence.

About the Emergency Services Program: Emergency Services provides food, personal care items, clothing, household items and short-term financial help with housing and utilities. The program also provides referrals for other needed social services. Target population is low-income and homeless families living in Davidson and surrounding counties and those facing crisis situations. This program serves approximately 10,000 individuals per year and consistently ranks in the top five providers on United Way's "211" information and referral service.

Who should apply: We are looking for current or post-graduate collegiate students with a major or interest in social sciences, or non-profit human services.

When: Start date will be at the start of the semester you are selected and end the week prior to finals.

Hours: Flexible unpaid hourly internship, credit hours are available. Time commitment can be flexible based upon the class requirements/availability of the intern.

Internship Job Description:
In this internship program you will participate in several on-going activities that are vital to providing programs and services to people we serve in Middle Tennessee. The following are brief descriptions of what you may be requested to handle:

• Work with guidance from the Emergency Services Staff to clear phone logs, set appointments, interview and provide customer service to clients
• Assist in organizing and maintaining the Second Harvest Food Pantry
• Assist in organizing and maintaining client records for services provided
• Assist in organizing and maintaining monthly stats reports

• Strong verbal and written skills
• Be a strong communicator with the public/community members both in person and over the phone on a daily basis as we return phone calls, and conduct interviews.
• Be able to lift no more than 30lbs due to food pantry work
