About Breaking Barriers: 5K run/walk

Join Spartans for Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project (NAOP) and MSU Students Advancing International Development (MSU SAID) as we break the barriers for global education and women's empowerment.

The event will begin near the MSU Rock on Farm Lane Road and continue on the west course.

** 100% of proceeds will be split 50/50 and support the following charities**

- Sponsor AIDS orphans in Nyakagyezi, Uganda (and surrounding communities) by providing free education and meals for them as well as provide micro loans to the elderly grannies that take care of the children. The village of Nyakagyezi is the home town of Nyaka’s founder, Jackson Kaguri;

- Support a women’s vocational workshop initiative to help and empower 500 women annually and give them opportunities to begin small business enterprises. The project will be implemented by SAID’s international partner, Shanti Ashram, a center for community development and learning at the epicenter of the 40 remote regions of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. Donations will help to expand their vocational training center on site;

This unique event will allow participants to receive stories of beneficiaries (women and children from either rural India or Uganda) that they will sponsor by running or walking.

A motivational speech will be made by Dr. John Brewster who has provided medical and dental assistance in remote regions of Uganda.

Event sponsors include:
• MSU Residence Halls Association
• MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni Association (CANRAA)
• Eat at State
• Michigan Governor’s Council + Pure Michigan FITness Series

Pre-registration fees are $20 for adults, $10 for students, and children under 3 run/walk for free. Registration is $25 (adults) and $15 (children) the day of event.
