The Lands at Hillside Farms is a historic, non-profit, educational dairy farm located in Shavertown, Pennsylvania. Our mission is to teach life choices that are healthy, practical, and sustainable so those born 200 years from now will have access to the same or better opportunities and resources. Here at Hillside, the term sustainable means far more than what applies to the environment (although the environment is a critical piece of our mission). We believe that for a community, nation, or world to be sustainable we must look at other key elements, such as the family, physical, emotional, and mental health, education, animal welfare, nutrition, access to healthy foods, and a most valuable piece - our children.
We offer farm-based education programs to teach math, history, science, biology, animal husbandry, and community service. Our Green Guides Programs for Vulnerable Youth provides on-farm and on-location (school) education to children who are disadvantaged or otherwise vulnerable. This includes our Children's Grief Camp. Now in its 8th year, Children's Grief Camp includes farm-based activities and lessons, animal assisted interventions, grief education activities, and grief sessions to children who have experienced trauma. There is no charge to attend Green Guides or Children's Grief Camp.
