About SHIM Volunteers

Share your time and talents. Volunteer with SHIM.

South Hills neighbors make the best volunteers. And in the last year, volunteers served over 20,200 hours - that’s 842 days of non-stop volunteering by the South Hills community. But there’s more work to be done. Join our community of neighbors helping neighbors!

To discuss a volunteer opportunity for you, your family or group, or to RSVP to attend an upcoming orientation, contact Debi Dempsey, our volunteer manager, at or 412-854-9120 ext. 106.

Refugee Mentoring Program

SHIM has recently launched a new mentoring program for teenage refugee youth. We are currently looking for adult (age 18 and over) mentors to work with our students! Mentors facilitate discussions, help with activities (like craft projects, cooking demonstrations, and community service projects), and serve as positive role models for our students.
Can’t commit to regular mentoring? No problem! We’re looking for professionals from a variety of fields to serve as guest speakers at the program. We have had specific requests for the following careers, but if you’re passionate about what you do, call us and we’d love to have you speak!

-Police Officer
-Fire Fighter
-Navy/Air Force
-Computer Engineer
-Professional Sports Player/Coach

If you are interested in doing a career presentation, please contact program coordinator Casey Rich at
