About Sierra Leone Marathon Assistant Race Director

The Role: Sierra Leone Marathon Assistant Race Director 24 Feb - 30 May 2014 (14 weeks, dates negotiable).

Sierra Leone Marathon Ltd in support of Street Child is offering the opportunity to become a leading part of the 2014 marathon organisation team. We need several people to spend up to 3 months in Makeni, Sierra Leone planning and coordinating the 2014 event.

The Assistant Event Director is the main organiser of the race itself in Makeni. They will immerse themselves in the local community ensuring the event is planned, communicated and advertised at all levels.

Successful applicants will undertake an internship for Sierra Leone Marathon Ltd organising a large scale flagship fundraising event for Street Child. We ask volunteers to pay for their own subsidised flight but accommodation and food in country will be free. The candidate should plan to incur in country cost of living expense to maintain social activity etc (GB£5-10 per day).

The ideal candidate would possess the following attributes:

Excellent written and communication skills.
Hard working, pro-active and professional work ethic.
Enthusiasm to learn about event organisation, coordination and fundraising.
Keen to spend time living and working in Africa immersed in local culture.
Independent and able to make decisions with little guidance.

We are not looking for a professional race organiser, there will be a full event management and medical setup on race day. What we need is someone to spend 3 months getting everything lined up - a 'fixer'! This role is ideal for someone who is young and keen to travel.
