Your gift today supports Safe Haven’s mission of caring for our big cats, bears and other residents rescued from horrendous conditions: living in tiny cages with no room to run or play, surviving for days without food or water, no medical care for injuries or illness, no protection from sun, rain or snow, unrelieved boredom and, sometimes, both physical and mental abuse. Safe Haven Wildlife Sanctuary is an accredited no-kill rescue organization providing lifelong care for our rescued residents. We have been called Nevada’s only true sanctuary by the Nevada Humane Society and are accredited by both the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and the American Sanctuary Association. In addition to caring for our residents and rehabilitation cases, Safe Haven works tirelessly through our educational outreach programs to educate the public regarding private exotic “pet” ownership and to help end the captive wildlife crisis.
Many of Safe Haven’s rescues were privately owned “pets” purchased from exotic animal breeders; others were victims of unregulated roadside zoos. One such resident is white tiger Clarence, surrendered by his Ohio owner and rehomed at Safe Haven. Before coming to Safe Haven, Clarence endured the unimaginably crowded conditions of a tiny 20’ x 30’ enclosure that he shared with several other tigers. Not surprisingly these conditions resulted in fighting within the cage and poor Clarence suffered a serious bite wound after being attacked by one of his cage mates.
Like Clarence, many Safe Haven residents come to us with urgent medical needs. Many have injuries or wounds caused by other animals, unsafe cage conditions, abuse or even self-injurious behaviors resulting from overwhelming boredom or anxiety. Others are sick or debilitated from poor nutrition, unsanitary conditions, poor ventilation, exposure to weather, and lack of exercise. Additionally, Safe Haven often accepts elderly animals, with all the medical conditions we expect with old age. In addition to individual medical needs, all new residents need baseline blood work, vaccinations, neuter/spay and, often, their first ever dental exam. Safe Haven residents frequently experience dental problems due to poor diet and chewing on inappropriate items – rocks, wood, metal caging – out of hunger, boredom or frustration. Many of our residents require x-rays, on-going medications, tooth extractions, even expensive surgeries. After initial treatment, all Safe Haven residents participate in routine preventative medical care as well. By donating toward our veterinary care program, you help provide urgent care for new residents, and regular veterinary health checks for Clarence and other Safe Haven residents.
Clarence now enjoys a life of luxury in a spacious outdoor enclosure complete with a pool, comfortable, weatherproof den, climbing platform, toys, an engaging enrichment program, a plentiful and nutritious diet, unlimited fresh, clean water to drink and room to run and play. It’s your gifts that provide all Safe Haven residents with their new outlook on life. Thank you for helping Safe Haven provide the love and care these animals deserve.
Two years ago, Safe Haven accepted two black bears Ben and Teddy for boarding while their case played out in the Ohio Supreme Court and were finally awarded permanent placement when the state of Ohio won its case. Ben, nine years old and Teddy, now 7 years old have a long life ahead of them as black bears can live to be at least 30 years of age in captivity. Your gift helps ensure our commitment to their care.
But your gift isn’t only about our those already enjoying safe, healthy, secure lives at Safe Haven. You can designate your gift toward helping those animals still in need.
We will be constructing a new, half-acre big cat habitat. Safe Haven has always tried to keep animal friends together and remaining rescue-ready is a high priority. With Safe Haven staff and volunteers providing all construction labor, your donations can be more efficiently used to support only material purchases. By choosing to support our new multi-cat enclosure, you will be ensuring that others like Clarence can enjoy the love and care of a forever home at Safe Haven.
Thank you for supporting Clarence and all of our residents at Safe Haven. Your gift will be life-changing for animals in desperate need. Please consider visiting Safe Haven to see your dollars at work. Follow the great work made possible by you on Facebook and the Safe Haven website.
