About Super Summer Readers - Reading Sidekick

SA Youth, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio (BGCSA), and San Antonio Youth Literacy (SAYL) have combined forces to execute the Super Summer Readers program! This 10-week program will provide students with a designated reading time for one hour a day, three days a week, consisting of 30 minutes of paired reading and 30 minutes of reading extension activities. During this time, volunteers “Reading Sidekicks” will work with students to provide them with reading support.

Sidekicks will read with students: helping them figure out unknown words, asking questions to check the students’ understanding of the book, and encouraging their efforts to read fluently. At the end of the reading session, Sidekicks will assist students in filling out their reading logs to track the number of pages they read.

Application Process

After signing up for a volunteer shift, Reading Sidekicks will be contacted by one of our Volunteer Coordinators with steps for completing the background check application. Please make sure you complete your background application as soon as possible. Volunteers that have not cleared their background check, prior to their shift, will be unable to work with students.
