About Become a Reading Partner - support literacy in your community, have a lifelong impact on a child

Looking to bridge the literacy gap and support educational equity in your community? Spotlighted by WJZ Baltimore as a community driven organization, Reading Partners is looking for community-minded volunteers like you to provide one-on-one tutoring sessions and increase the literacy scores of K-4 students at 15 under-resourced schools across Baltimore City.

Reading Matters. Fostering the ability to read has a long lasting impact, empowering students to reach their full potential. Research shows that students that can read at grade level by fourth grade have greater opportunity to succeed in the classroom and beyond!

Together we are better. With a heavy emphasis on partnership, we work closely with teachers and school administrators to provide extra reading instruction for growing readers during school hours. Every week, you will be meeting one-on-one with your student to develop their literacy skills and build their passion for reading through our structured, proven, step-by-step curriculum. You will also receive ongoing support and coaching from our well-trained program staff to set you and your student up for success. Finally, research has indicated our curriculum as effective in improving a student’s reading proficiency as 84% of our students met or exceeded their end of year goals.

No prior teaching experience required and anyone over 18 years old can volunteer with us. Session times are flexible (Mondays to Fridays, between 8 am and 5:30 pm). Currently empowering 600 growing readers!

All volunteers must complete two training sessions, an in-person background check at Baltimore City Public Schools headquarters, and agree to our tutor code of conduct before working with students.
