About Join your local #metoo movement! Become a Sexual Assault Counselor!

Our volunteers function as Sexual Assault Counselors on our 24-hour hotline and as advocates, where they accompany survivors to report their assault. You do not need to have prior counseling experience to work on the hotline.

Our next volunteer training will be held in the Spring of 2019, starting February 19th- March 30th. Our training is an 81-hour program held over a six-week period. Classes are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (from 6-9:30pm) and Saturdays (9:30am-3:30pm). This training is held three times a year, so if you are unable to commit to spring training but would like information regarding future trainings, please let me know.

There is a $150.00 fee that covers training costs and resources. This fee can be negotiated for those with low income or who are unemployed.

We meet with all applicants for an initial interview prior to training, allowing us an opportunity to assess together whether our goals match your needs and expectations. We intend this to be an informal space to explore your thoughts about counseling and advocacy in general, as well as your reasons for doing this particular work at this time in your life. We will further dialogue around your ideas about victim responses, societal reactions to sexual assault and outline the commitments and expectations we will have from you during and after the training.

After the initial training period, SACs are expected to take one shift per week on the hotline for the equivalent of one year, but they can definitely continue as a SAC beyond their one year commitment. Ongoing training and support is provided on the last Wednesday of every month, from 6-8pm, in order to debrief our experiences and continue the learning process. These continuing education hours are mandatory.

In addition to being a Sexual Assault Counselor on the hotline or at the Keller Center, other volunteer opportunities are also available. For example, SACs can receive additional training to co-facilitate support groups, provide in person counseling, and conduct rape and violence prevention educational presentations. Additionally, SACs are welcome to assist with fundraising, perform administrative tasks, and become a member of our Board of Directors.
