About Reach Out and Read Early Literacy Program
Open Door participates with Reach Out and Read a national literacy program designed to take place in medical offices across the country to promote kindergarten readiness. We believe that early literacy is part of a healthy childhood and leads to better success in kindergarten and life.
This is an ongoing program that happens every time we have reading volunteers in our waiting area. Children's book donations and reading volunteers are need on an ongoing basis during the entire year. Additional children's books are need during the summertime because we have many additional reading volunteers.
Please help! We need your time and enthusiasm as a reading volunteer. Plus we need children's picture books and chubby board books. Be green, donate books!
Open Door has four locations you can participate at: Ossining, Port Chester, Sleepy Hollow and Mt. Kisco.
The program is geared for preschool children. The doctor's model works with children from 6 months to age 5. The volunteer model works more with children about age 2 - 7.
