About Canoe Day Volunteers
The refuge, in collaboration with the Friends of Noxubee Refuge, hosts a canoe day on the third Saturday of each month from April through October. This event allows visitors to explore the wildlife on Bluff Lake by canoe. Canoes, kayaks, life jackets, and paddles are provided free of charge. The event goes from 9 AM until 3 PM and is located at the Cypress Cove Boardwalk, Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge (1 mile west of Visitor Center on Bluff Lake Road). If water levels are too low at Cypress Cove, the launch site may be relocated to the Visitor Center. Volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of activities including: setting up and taking down the equipment for the event, greeting visitors, helping participants find the correct size life jackets and paddles, and helping visitors launch their canoes.
There are two shifts: 8:30AM – 12:00 PM and 12:00 PM – 3:30 PM.
Volunteers must by 18 years of age or accompanied by an adult. Organized groups are welcome. Volunteers must complete a Volunteer Services Agreement when they arrive. Canoeing experience is helpful, but not required. It is also a good chance for you to go canoeing too!
