About Museum of the Earth Docent

Moe square

Would you like to share your love of the natural world and Earth's history with Museum visitors? How about expanding your own knowledge about the geological history of the finger lakes? Learn how to teach Museum visitors to find, identify, and collect fossils from the Museum's Fossil Lab or their own back yards? As a Museum Docent you can do all this and more! Once you are comfortable with your knowledge, other opportunities will open up such as Discovery Box Explainer, Museum Tour Guide, Museum Program Educator, and Prep Lab Preparator.

We need volunteers to help with:

Museum Volunteer Orientation

To become a Museum Docent you must first attend a Museum Volunteer Orientation.

Every third Sunday of the Month there is an Orientation offered at the Museum from 1:30 - 3:30 pm. During the Orientation, there is a short training for all the different volunteer opportunities offered in the Museum. Other volunteer opportunities available throughout the institution are also discussed. You will be assessed for your knowledge of the subject matter, asked about your desires to learn techniques and information, and what areas you are interested in volunteering. You will be taken on a history of the Earth/Museum tour along with a behind the scenes tour during the Orientation. You will leave with new excitement about your future volunteer experience, ready to begin your volunteering which will lead to become a full-fledged Museum of the Earth Docent.

We ask you make a 2 hour a week commitment volunteering in the Museum. Usually you will start by shadowing other docents. Once you feel comfortable with your knowledge you are able to schedule to volunteer on your own. We believe each volunteer is an individual and treated as such!

Contact Maureen, the volunteer coordinator to sign up for the next Orientation.
