About Volunteer at Your Museum!

You lucky dog!

You are about to make the greatest (by far) decision of your life, to 1) be my best friend, and 2) join our excellent team here at the Northwest Montana Historical Society. We could not be successful or even exist at all if it weren’t for the 10,000+ hours that dedicated people donate to us on a yearly basis. I hope you have the chance to get to know some of our other 40 or so volunteers. We have some volunteers that are merely substitutes, while others are here multiple times a week for many reasons. Whatever amount of time you have to donate, we have a job for you.

I’m not going to bore anybody with too much history about this building or organization; all that can certainly be found elsewhere. So I’ll jump to a vacant, run-down Central School building in the late 1990s. A small but dedicated group of locals who advocated for a museum in Kalispell. The town itself was up-in-arms, with opinion divided pretty equally; harsh words were exchanged. In December 1997, the city council voted in a 5-4 decision to spend $2.4 million in tax increments to restore the building to its former grandeur.

See? Not too boring right? But your time at the Museum should not be boring either. We have numerous opportunities to volunteer, with something for everyone:
- Do you like a set schedule and to see the day-to-day action of the museum? The Front Desk and Bookstore may be your ticket.
- If you are technologically-savvy and like working with photographs or artifacts, why not try the collections department?
- Event hosts and bartenders enjoy flexibility and getting to know different organization in the community.
- We are an education organization , and offer so much more than fancy book learnin’! Our docents and 1895 Classroom teachers are the reason why.
- It is no easy talk caring for an 1894 building and large lawn/gardens. Our building/grounds crew know the struggle, but also reap the rewards.
