About Dignity Health California Hospital Medical Center (CHMC)

California Hospital is looking for volunteers to work in their new sub-acute unit. The sub-acute unit is different from other units in the hospital. Patients admitted to the SAU are those who have had an acute illness, injury, or exacerbation of a disease process, but are no longer in need of the acute care they would receive in other critical care units. However, SAU patients are still in fragile states and need more specialized care than what is offered in most skilled nursing facilities.

Patients are encouraged to participate in an activity program. Such activities will include sensory stimulation, bedside visits and social/group events. Volunteers will play a vital role in the activity program in the sub-acute unit. Volunteers will assist the activity coordinator in planning, documenting and performing enriching activities for our unique group of patients. Some examples of activities that volunteers may be involved in: cognitive, physical, diversional and social tasks.

All types of volunteers are needed. You do not need to have previous health care experience.

CHMC requests that volunteers commit to a minimum of one semester of service. Candidates are required to submit an application and attend a personal interview. Once accepted, candidates must submit to a background screening, a health screening and complete online self-study training. All requirements are provided free of charge.

Volunteers are expected to commit to 2 hours per week on a recurring schedule. Volunteers select a single shift based on the following options Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday from 8:30 am – 10:30 am, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm or 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm.

Application Process
