Founded in September 2010, Monadnock at Home is a membership based organization created to enable seniors in southern New Hampshire to live and thrive in their homes as they age. With a current count of 120 members (average age is 82 years), we cover ten rural towns, encompassing more than 400 square miles. Membership fees ($17 to $50/month dependent on household size and income) provide less than half of our operating budget; the rest must be raised by our volunteer Development Committee.
Specifically, we help members with their daily needs such as transportation to medical appointments (doctor visits, dialysis treatments, chemotherapy, physical therapy etc.), weekly grocery trips, meal delivery, home maintenance tasks etc. Without MaH’s help, our vulnerable seniors would miss many of their medical appointments, resulting in a serious decline in their health.
We also provide social programs to help prevent isolation and loneliness which have been proven to dramatically increase mortality. For instance, in March our members attended a Rotary luncheon, we held an Introduction to Facebook session and in April, a Fire and Fall Prevention seminar; the latter two run by MaH Board members. We also hold monthly coffee hours where members can enjoy social contact and lively conversation.
In 2016, we initiated our Member Helping Member program whereby members who’d like to receive a daily check-in call have been paired with another member who wants to make those calls. For some of our receiving members, that one phone call may be the only human contact they have all day. These regular calls give members on both ends of the contact something to look forward to and have led to new friendships and a more positive outlook for our seniors.
This year we are beginning to implement the MedPals program. MedPals are trained volunteers who will attend medical appointments with our members, help them ask questions and understand their follow up care. With so many of our members having family that live at a distance, we anticipate that MedPals will be an invaluable program in supporting the health and well-being of our members.
For nearly 7 years, MaH has provided an invaluable service to local seniors who not only choose to age in their own homes, but could not afford care in an assisted living or nursing home facility where the median cost in NH ranges from $5,000 to $10,000/month, respectively. By supporting seniors in their homes we generally delay or completely obviate the move to institutional care where many seniors, without long term care insurance or abundant resources, would eventually become a drain on the social welfare system.
Please help us support our seniors so they can remain at home which is where they want to be!
