MIS: A Catalyst For Positive Change
A Teacher's Misfortune Turns Into A Message Of Love
Our fundamental educational goal at MIS is to work toward making the world a better place. But we cannot do that on theory alone. We believe our children can make the world a better place as they increase their understanding and appreciation of human experiences, cultural perspectives, and diverse connections. The impact of the changes we are able to make in ourselves today will change how we feel and what actions we take tomorrow. We are hopeful that as a result, the world around us will change for the better.
What better example of being the catalyst for change than our very own teacher, Ibrahin Mena. Ibrahin was the victim of a racist encounter at a local grocery store here in Missoula. Following this encounter, he decided to take action by sharing his story and reacting with vulnerability, love and inclusivity. His message and actions went viral! Ibrahin showed to not only our students but people across the country, how to be a risk-taker and impart kindness when faced with adversity. His principled response is exactly the wisdom we hope to impart on every student that comes through MIS.
