About Eudora Welty House and Garden - Volunteer Guide


This volunteer will provide visitors with information that will enrich their visit to the Eudora Welty House and Garden (EWHG) and to Mississippi. This information shall educate the public about the life, work, and surroundings of Welty – one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century.

Operate basic audiovisual equipment for visitors (training provided)
Escort group to the area where tour will begin and explain Museum guidelines
Conduct guided tour of House and Garden

Works well with the public and can relate to people of all ages, backgrounds, and educational levels
Willingness to learn — able to memorize in-depth tour information
Well-spoken and can convey knowledge in an enthusiastic manner
Interest in Welty, literature, or creative pursuits in others
Adaptable and responsive to guests’ needs

Successfully complete training
Stand for a minimum of one hour, navigate stairs and rough terrain
Work in summer or winter weather conditions

Time Commitment:
Continuous service assignment — at minimum, twice a month
Twenty (20) hours of volunteer service per year at the Eudora Welty House and Garden are required to remain on the active volunteer list

Continuing education
Documented volunteer service for work or school credit
A 15% discount in the Mississippi History Store locations (Eudora Welty House and Old Capitol Museum)
All training and training-related materials provided by the Eudora Welty House
Volunteer appreciation activities provided by the Eudora Welty House and Garden and MDAH
