About Volunteer Tutors Needed!

The lack of adult literacy skills is a challenge we face in Midland that inevitably affects us all. Let’s stand together to help solve this crisis! Please consider becoming volunteer tutor today.

Tutors help adult learners reach their individual literacy goals. No teaching experience is needed. You need a high school diploma or equivalent (and the desire to help make a difference in our community). Midland Need to Read provides all the training, materials, and support required.

Tutors are a key component to our work, and we couldn’t do it without them! They help students meet their literacy goals through one-to-one and/or small group instruction. Meeting times and locations must be convenient for both the student and the tutor. The MN2R Literacy House (located at 1709 W. Wall Street) is available as a meeting location during office hours, or tutors may meet also meet with students at any of the approved off-site locations. Tutors provide encouragement, are prepared for all tutoring sessions, review student work, keep record of student’s progress, and report all tutoring hours to the MN2R staff.

If you are interested in becoming a MN2R volunteer tutor, please complete the online application through our website or by making an appointment at the Literacy House (432-682-9693). Once you have submitted your application, the staff will contact you to schedule a time to visit with you and discuss any questions that you may have. In addition, you will receive a brief training (approximately an hour and a half) at a time that is convenient for you. When you are ready, the professional staff will match with you the proper student. The matching is based on your and the student’s time availability, literacy goals, and preferences. We provide you with all the books and materials needed, free of charge, to ensure your student’s success.

Application Process

Interested individuals may complete an online application at http://www.midlandneedtoread.org/tutors/ or may complete an application in person by scheduling an appointment at the Literacy House by calling 432-682-9693.
