About Young Authors' Conference Volunteers

There are several different roles we need to be filled for the day of the conference! Please send an email if you're interested in any of the roles.

Workshop Leader: As a workshop leader you will be responsible for a group of 5-7

students on the day of the conference. You will sit with them during each of their instruction

sessions and snack time and help to facilitate discussion during the workshopping of their

individual pieces. If you have never workshopped a piece of writing before, have no fear! We

will have a workshop leader training session.

Runner: The runners are responsible for odd-end jobs on the day of the conference. We

need runners who are flexible and ready to take action. The runners will keep time for the

instructors and workshop leaders, handle emergency situations, and general preparations

during the conference. These volunteers will help to coordinate the set-up and teardown.

Pre-Conference Preparations: There are two ways to help before the conference

starts. We need volunteers to read the stories of the applicants in order to place them in

appropriate groupings for their workshops. We also need volunteers to help prepare the

packets the attendees receive on the day of the conference, as each one is individualized.

Registration Team: If you can’t make it for the entire day of the conference, but still

want to help out, we need volunteers to help with the student and parent check-in. When they

check-in they will receive a schedule of their day, meet their other group members, and will sit

with their workshop leader for the opening remarks. The registration team will make sure each

student that is registered is accounted for and has the correct materials.

Set-Up and Teardown: We need as many hands as possible for this task. If you can’t

make the entire day, you have the options of setting up or tearing down before or after the

conference. Anyone who is attending the full day of the conference is also expected to help

with the set up and teardown.

Snack and Book Room Supervisors: In the snack and book room the students will

get two snacks during the day, two free books and is where they will also eat lunch. The

supervisors are responsible for keeping the room neat, making sure each student only takes

one snack and one book and restocking the book table.
