About Head Start

Top center

Head Start is an early childhood development school readiness, and
family support program for children from birth to school age, their
families, and pregnant women in Luzerne and Wyoming Counties. We
promote family self-sufficiency, foster healthy outcomes, and enhance
the quality of life for children and families through education and
partnerships with school districts and the community.

Head Start provides pre-school services for children in low-income families. Children ages 3-4 attend the pre-school during the workweek for educational, health, and nutritional activities. Families play an integral part in the child’s experience. Volunteers are needed during operational hours (8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.) to support teachers in the classroom. Volunteers are never solely responsible for the children.

Other possibilities include special projects or enrichment activities, such as a music lesson. Outdoor work, maintenance, food preparation, and clerical support are also sometimes needed.
