About Early Head Start

Top center

Early Head Start recognizes the importance of being involved with families
as early as possible to help children later succeed in school and life.
Early Head Start provides early, continuous, intensive and comprehensive
child development and family support services to pregnant women and families
with children birth to age three. This full year program offers services in
selected Head Start services areas. Included are parenting education, health
services, early childhood development, group activities with other parents,
and support and referral services. Individualized services are provided
through home visiting. Children who are enrolled in the Early Head Start program
are given priority for the Head Start preschool program upon achieving age eligibility.

Head Start provides pre-school services for children in low-income families. Children ages 3-4 attend the pre-school during the workweek for educational, health, and nutritional activities. Families play an integral part in the child’s experience. Volunteers are needed during operational hours (8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.) to support teachers in the classroom. Volunteers are never solely responsible for the children.

Other possibilities include special projects or enrichment activities, such as a music lesson. Outdoor work, maintenance, food preparation, and clerical support are also sometimes needed.
