About Health and Life Skills

We develop young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and develop the skills to live successfully as self-sufficient, contributing adults. We develop ways to help young people achieve and maintain healthy lifestyles.

SMART Moves, our drug and alcohol prevention education program, is the prime instruction piece in this area. The Club sub-contracts with the Lackawanna County Commission on Drug & Alcohol to implement this program. Another program is the Get Real About Violence Program (GRAV) implemented by Lackawanna County Commission on Drug & Alcohol in Lackawanna County and the Wyoming Valley Alcohol and Drug Services, Inc. in Luzerne County. This program is geared for Club members ages 6-13. The program teaches students skills to be healthy by showing them how to maintain self-control when tempted by violence, resolve conflicts without violence, and prevent or avoid situations by using self control. In addition, a variety of personal hygiene and safety programs, health fairs, and other wellness activities are offered to Club members.
