About Use Your Words to Change a Life

What if you lived right here in DuPage County but couldn’t read, write, speak, or understand English? Where would you work? How would you get around? Who would answer your questions?

Believe it or not, this is a real struggle for thousands of DuPage County residents. At Literacy DuPage alone, we have nearly 300 adult learners waiting to be matched with an English language tutor.

You can help. Become a volunteer tutor with Literacy DuPage.

Tutors help learners gain practical life skills. Our learners’ goals range from filling out basic forms to holding conversations with their children’s teachers or pediatricians. Literacy DuPage will equip you with the knowledge and resources you need to provide a learning experience tailored to your learner’s specific goals.

Your involvement could help learners like Christian, Pablo, and Janie achieve life-changing results. Visit http://literacydupage.org/successstories.php to read their stories and see the kind of impact you can make.

Application Process

We orient new volunteers every few weeks, at training locations all around the county. To learn how you can get started as a volunteer tutor, call (630) 416-6699 to sign up for our next volunteer orientation at the date/location above. Otherwise, visit our website at http://literacydupage.org/becomeatutor.php for more information.

• No teaching experience or foreign language background is necessary. You will receive 18 hours of tutor training from our staff. Then, once you’re matched with a learner, we’ll provide ongoing support to help you meet that person’s needs.

• Learning happens one-on-one, two hours a week. Literacy DuPage matches your schedule with your learner’s schedule for one-on-one tutoring. You and your learner will meet at a mutually convenient time and place for one two-hour session each week.
