About Becoming a New Student

Welcome to Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut. Enter our “doors of learning” for a successful start in your education, in your career, and in your life. They're always wide open for incoming students in need of basic literacy skills.

For nearly 30 years, our nonprofit organization has been building literacy for adult English language learners in the greater Milford and Stratford areas – and we do that at no cost to our students. Our volunteers – who donate over thousands of hours a year – provide tutoring (either in person or virtual) to adults who wish to learn the English language or enhance the reading, writing, speaking, and math skills necessary to lead productive lives in our community.

Most tutoring is provided one-on-one, so tutors can tailor the instruction to the student’s needs. A student might seek help with reading comprehension, essay writing, speech and pronunciation, and conversation, or might want to prepare for getting a driver’s license, taking a career advancement test, or becoming a U.S. citizen. Our tutors also strive to familiarize students, especially those who are recent arrivals to this country, with American culture.

It takes great courage for many of our students to contact us and ask for help. We celebrate their determination and their dreams, and we honor the tutors and other volunteers who promote literacy in our students and in our communities.
