Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation (LRSF) is a not-for-profit organization that has been in operation for over 60 years. Its mission is to:
• Promote and encourage scholarships and opportunities for higher education among residents of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire (our primary service area is Laconia, Gilford and Belmont, however, scholarships are also awarded in other areas of Belknap County including: Alton, Meredith and Sanbornton)
• Act as a clearinghouse to receive scholarship funds from various donors
• Encourage the establishment of additional scholarships
• Screen applications and distribute scholarships to qualifying applicants
The majority of scholarships awarded annually are to Lakes Region high school seniors or previous award recipients, still in college, looking for financial assistance to help fund their remaining term in college. We also support scholarships awarded for Lakes Region applicants looking to enhance their education and skills (i.e. nursing, plumbing, etc.) by attending schools such as Laconia Adult Education and Lakes Region Community College.
The success of the Foundation has grown substantially over the last 61 years. At its inception in 1956, the Foundation, thanks to the generosity of eight civic groups and businesses, provided $2,650 in scholarships to 16 recipients. In 2016, with a donor base of 245, the Foundation was able to award $348,485 to 302 local students. That brings the 61 year awards total to $5,552,980 and 4,815 recipients.
While the primary focus of the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation will always be to generate more dollars for scholarships, meeting our normal administrative costs is also important. The funding of these administrative costs is generated through limited resources. In 2002, we launched the “Friends of the Foundation Operating Fund (FOFOF),” a campaign to help raise annual operating funds. Included in this campaign are the funds from our annual Spelling Bee which generates approximately $7,500 annually. Without these donations, which have ranged from ten dollars to several thousand dollars, we would not be able to cover our annual operating costs and ensure that the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation could continue its mission in the community.
DONATIONS TO THE "FRIENDS OF THE FOUNDATION" ARE, IN EFFECT, A VITAL PART OF EVERY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED. OFTEN FOLKS WILL TELL US THEY WOULD LIKE TO HELP, BUT WHAT THEY CAN AFFORD TO GIVE IS ONLY “A DROP IN THE BUCKET.” WE BELIEVE THAT ‘EVERY LITTLE DROP’ COUNTS, SO WE ADOPTED A “DROP IN THE BUCKET” THEME.
CAN YOU SPARE A DROP?
