About Teaching Literature in Jail
Inside Literature is seeking volunteer instructors with advanced degrees in the Humanities or Teaching Certification to lead virtual courses "at" the Travis County Correctional Complex. Inside Literature teaches Literature and Rhetoric courses in English and Spanish. We welcome applicants who would like to teach in either language. Each course is about six weeks long, meeting once a week. We have a list of about 100 texts to teach for you to choose from, representing a wide swath of World Literature.
Teaching with Inside Literature offers our instructors valuable pedagogical training, as well as first-hand knowledge of the importance of education in a social justice setting thereby expanding the horizons these professional educators might pursue and the issues they will tackle over the course of their careers. It helps to develop their own ties to their community as well as promoting the importance of using their education and knowledge to engage in their community. Inside Literature stresses educators’ responsibility to the community by putting the ‘human’ back in humanities and making the study of literature available to wider audiences.
Application Process
Please visit https://www.insideliterature.org/teaching for more information on teaching with Inside Literature and to access the application. Volunteer instructors teaching virtually do NOT need to pass a Travis County Sheriff's Office background check, but Inside Literature will check references. All applicants must be over 18.
