About Libraries for Dreams

The libraries for Dreams is a project that sets up mini-libraries in public primary schools in the low incomeareas of Nairobi by renovating run down classrooms that are not in use within the school compounds into lower and upper primary libraries. We are targeting the 7-15 year age bracket because we believe that building libraries provides sanctuaries for children through the use books and their imagination to create their own dreams and stories. We are aiming to build five libraries in 2015 and six in 2016 within the Starehe and Mathare constituency

The project’s goals are:

1. To provide an environment in the public schools that encourages the culture of reading books.

2. To provide libraries that can be utilized by children whose families are unable to purchase books for them.

3. To help reduce inequalities between the privately owned public schools, public schools that receive private funding and those those have libraries with those that don’t have the facility.

4. To allow children to utilize the resources within the libraries to challenge their status quo and environment.

HOW COULD YOU HELP?

Impacting Youth Trust is seeking volunteers who will join our team and assist in renovating run down classrooms into a library that will benefit over 700 children per school. The volunteer program that we have generated offers a blend of philanthropic activities and a holiday experience that allows the participants to fully immerse themselves in the project while still enjoying the beauty that Kenya has to offer. We are looking for individuals who are passionate, committed and inspired and not scared to get their hands dirty with us as we strive to change the community we live in through the setting up of libraries in schools that cannot afford to do so themselves.

VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be ready to commit, work hard, have fun and get dirty!

• Be ready to take directions and do things the Impacting Youth Trust way.

• Must be 21 years old and older.

• No prior construction experience is needed

• Must sign a release and waiver of liability form before working.
