Horizons at Warner is a six-week, tuition-free, summer academic enrichment program serving students of the Rochester City School District grades K-8th from low socioeconomic households. One of 60 Horizons National affiliates, Horizons at Warner was the first to be located on a university campus. For the past nine summers, Horizons at Warner has been located at the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester. We have grown from serving 30 to over 150 students, all of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch. The goal of our program is to prevent summer slide and instill a love of reading, thinking mathematically, and communicating effectively. Our ratio of 15 students to 2 NYS certified teachers allows for the development of close relationships and provides authentic and meaningful learning experiences. In addition, our students learn to swim and participate in STEM problem solving activities, arts programs, and theme-relevant educational field experiences. We infuse mindfulness and outdoor wellness activities throughout our daily programming. As a result, Horizons at Warner students also develop confidence, make healthy life style choices and become creative thinkers.
