High Country News is the nation's leading source of reporting on the American West. We publish an award-winning magazine and website: hcn.org. Through in-depth reporting, High Country News covers the West’s communities, public lands, water, energy, wildlife, politics, growth and other issues now changing the face of the West. From Alaska and the Northern Rockies to the desert Southwest, from the Great Plains to the West Coast, High Country News covers 12 Western states and is the leading source for regional environmental news, analysis and commentary — an essential resource for those who care about this region.
At this time, the rural West desperately needs accurate, in-depth coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our COVID-19 reporting has focused on community response and impact in underserved parts of the West where there is little to no high-level journalism, such as rural areas, the borderlands, Native communities, and gateways to public lands. Just recently, the Brookings Institute noted that more than half of COVID-19 cases are in counties that are “news deserts.” HCN reaches beyond our own print and digital channels by offering our stories at no cost to local media outlets and helping local journalists put their community’s stories in perspective.
