Shawnice is a single mother of four children, one with asthma. When she was laid off from her job, her bills began to pile up.  The mother of a child with a medical condition, Shawnice knew she could not afford to be without electricity.   So she turned to the Greater Washington Urban League for help.  Through our utilities assistance program, we provided financial support to help Shawnice pay her overdue electricity bill and get back on her feet.

Thanks to compassionate people like you, this year GWUL gave over 65,000 people like Shawnice a hand up by providing programs and services that include housing resources, employment opportunities, and funds to help pay overdue gas, water, and electric bills.

Each year requests from people who are in need of emergency utility assistance are greater than the amount of money we receive to help them.  But you can help keep a family warm this winter by making a donation to GWUL’s utility assistance program.  In addition to warmth, your donation helps a family share a meal, provides the light a child needs to do homework, and supplies the power for an elderly person’s medical equipment.
