What’s the hotline? GSRNC maintains a “1-800” number for folks to call when they have questions about GSDs. The number is 1-800-SAVE-GSD (or, 1-800-728-3473).

The phone line is entirely staffed by volunteers. Each volunteer answers calls about a specific topic; our most common questions are:

I want to adopt a GSD! How do I do it?
I can’t keep my GSD. Can you help me?
I found a stray GSD – what do I do with it?
There’s a GSD in the XYZ shelter! Can you save it?

You don’t have to be an expert on any topic to answer questions, because we have “cheat-sheets” that cover almost everything. Plus, we have “mentors” who can help you out if you get stuck.

You don’t have to answer the calls directly when someone calls. When someone calls, our voicemail system asks them to choose the topic they’re calling about. It then routes the call to an answering system for the volunteer that covers that topic. The volunteer gets notified of the call, and can read it online, in an email, or listen to the voicemail. If it’s more convenient, the volunteer can have the calls go directly to their phone, so they can be answered “live”.

WHAT IT TAKES

Time commitment: 3 hours per week, semi-flexible

Location: Home based, no travel requirements

Technology needs: Email & phone connectivity

Skills: Good people skills, comfortable talking with strangers, able to track calls in an Excel spreadsheet
